Robyn O'Neil wins 2009 Hunting Art Prize.

HOUSTON, May 2, 2009 – Hunting PLC announced that A death, a fall, a march: toward a better world by Kingwood artist Robyn O’Neil is the winner of the $50,000 Hunting Art Prize for 2009. The drawing was selected from 129 final juried participants in the 29th annual award program, which is sponsored by the global oil services company and is the most generous annual art prize in North America. The announcement came during an evening awards gala on Saturday, May 2, at the Decorative Center of Houston. O’Neil’s works have been shown throughout Texas, across the country, and around the world, including the Whitney Museum in New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; ArtPace, San Antonio; Dallas Museum of Art; V1 Gallery, Copenhagen; Gallery Praz-Delavallade, Paris; and Hof & Huyser, Amsterdam.

She also received the Artadia Grant from Artadia – The Fund for Art and Dialogue, New York, and was international artist-in-residence at ArtPace in San Antonio and was included in the prestigious 2004 Whitney Biennial. “I’m deeply grateful to Hunting and the judges for this honor,” said O’Neil after the announcement. “I think it will translate to added exposure and greater visibility for my work, and help me communicate my vision to even more people. And I’m especially appreciative given that it comes during a time when we are seeing more and more cutbacks in sponsorship of the arts. It is the generosity of organizations like Hunting PLC that allows artists to continue to do what they love.”

The Hunting Art Prize is open to amateur, up-and-coming, and established artists in Texas who are 18 years of age or older. This year’s competition saw entries from over 180 cities and towns throughout the state. Submissions underwent a two-tiered jury process, after which nationally respected judges from San Antonio, Chicago, and Seattle selected O’Neil’s work as the 2009 winner. In 2006 the competition moved to Houston, where Hunting’s North American headquarters are located, after a quarter-century in the United Kingdom.
