Hunting Announces Call for Entries for 2007 Art Prize; Artists Statewide Eligible for $50,000 Award
HOUSTON— Hunting PLC, an international oil services company, announces the call for entries for its 2007 Hunting Art Prize—a $50,000 award open to established, emerging, and amateur artists from throughout Texas.
To participate, artists must sign up using the electronic form at www.huntingartprize.com and must mail one slide of a single two-dimensional piece of work, excluding photography. All entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, Nov. 17.
While last year’s competition focused on the Houston region – which is where Hunting’s North American headquarters are located – the prize’s scope has expanded this year to include any Texas resident 18 years of age or older.
“We believe an open competition attracts a wider range of work from more people,” said Dennis Proctor, Chief Executive of Hunting. “In the United Kingdom, it proved to be a great way for new and up-and-coming artists to gain recognition, and many of them have gone on to experience great success. To put it simply, we want Texas artists to have the same opportunities.”
The prize relocated to Houston in 2006 after 25 years in the United Kingdom, where it became one of Great Britain’s top arts awards. With a $50,000 prize, it is among the most generous in North America.
Entries in 2007 will be judged according to a two-tiered jury process.
After submissions have been reviewed to ensure compliance with contest rules, a panel of jurors will evaluate the slides and select finalists. Those chosen will then be asked to submit the artwork that represents their original slide submission to a second jury.
The second jury will then select the winning piece of work, which will be announced at a gala on April 28, 2007.
